HOST Policy Research: The Team
Wayne Isaac
Wayne Isaac joined HOST Policy Research as an Associate in November 2009. Wayne has extensive experience in training, management, inspection and review in the Further (FE) and Higher (HE) sectors. Since July 2008 he has been using these extensive skills to deliver interim management, education consultancy and research, through links with a range of agencies or through direct contracts with institutions. He is also a Quality Improvement Advisor with the Learning and Skills Improvement Agency (LSIS) (previously Quality Improvement Agency).
Education development and management experience: After studying Business and Management Studies at University, Wayne enjoyed a short management career in the commercial sector before returning to education. After completing a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) he commenced his career in Education. To date, Wayne has 30 years experience in education as a lecturer, tutor, programme leader, curriculum manager and senior manager in Learning and Skills Sector, including Faculty Head. In the 1990s to prepare himself for management posts at a higher level, Wayne studied for and successfully completed a Management Diploma developed specifically for Senior Managers in FE. This competence based programme (linked to the Management Charter Initiative MCI standards) helped new managers develop themselves to meet the challenges of senior management. Later in his leadership and management role he has helped support other managers towards similar competence based education management qualifications. He continues to offer management support to the sector as part of his portfolio of consultancy work. This includes support work in colleges funded through LSIS.
OFSTED inspection (Learning and Skills Sector) and QAA review (University and HE in FE) experience: Operating as a free-lance inspector for the last 12 years has given Wayne the opportunity to work with very many other organisations around the country. Managing the inspection process in the Further and Higher Education sectors requires high levels of time-management, planning, report writing and communication skills and he finds this work stimulating and rewarding, working under pressure to tight time scales. Wayne has had positive feedback on all aspects of his work with the various inspectorates. He has worked with QAA since 2002 as a Business subject reviewer and since 2006 as an Institutional Quality Enhancement and Review (IQER) reviewer. He is still an active OfSTED additional inspector and a QAA additional reviewer (5 reviews in 2009/10).
Professional updating and continuous professional development (CPD): Since leaving full-time employment Wayne has continued CPD to maintain and increase the currency of his skills. This includes ongoing training and annual updating provided by OFSTED and QAA as well as independent training. He has recently completed a one day course on “Safer Recruitment and Safeguarding in Education”.
Wayne is married (to a Primary Head Teacher) and has 2 grown up children. He likes rugby (watching), running (participating), music and travel. Wayne also likes to “put something back” into the community and has had many years of experience as a school governor.
