Jacqueline Hughes
Jacqui is an experienced consultant with over 30 years’ research, development and evaluation expertise in the areas of lifelong learning, information, advice and guidance, social inclusion, widening participation,e-learning and regeneration. Jacqui is a graduate of the Universities of Bath, Bristol and East Anglia and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. A qualified guidance practitioner and teacher (Post-Graduate Diploma in Guidance and Certificate in Education), she completed an M.Ed and a PhD whilst working in senior roles. She has been a HOST Associate since 2005.
Following her first degree, Jacqui taught in comprehensive schools, becoming head of a history department before taking a career break when having her first child. While her children were young she carried out a variety of research projects, taught Adult Basic Education and English as a Second Language and was a Governor at her children’s school.
In 1985, Jacqui moved into a career encompassing research, training and regeneration activity and the development of information, advice and guidance services to inform career and educational choices. This work included the development of innovative community based education and training projects in areas of high deprivation and research on labour market, training and assessment related issues. She also led a national project working with further education colleges, key agencies and community groups on adult access to education, assessment and career progression.
In 1991 she was appointed to lead the development of an adult guidance service and to establish the business development arm of a Careers Guidance (now Connexions) Service She was then appointed as SW Regional Development Manager for Ufi learndirect where she developed partnership working with a range of organisations including LLSCs, Government Office for the South West and the RDA.
For the last six years, Jacqui has operated as an independent consultant, providing research, strategic development and evaluation support for a range of organisations. She has particular expertise in: information, advice and guidance, addressing the youth NEET (not in employment, education or training) agenda, widening participation, and regeneration. In addition to work with regional government agencies, she has also carried out research and evaluation projects for Local Authorities, Learning and Skills Councils (LSCs), Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) agencies, Ufi learndirect, Connexions Partnerships, Regional Skills Partnerships, the Welsh Assembly, the British Educational Communications and Technology Agency (BECTA), the South West Offender Learning and Skills Service (OLASS), Regeneration Agencies, the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS, formerly QIA and CEL), the Training and Development Agency for Schools and the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training (Cedefop).
Outside work, Jacqui is a keen yoga practitioner who also loves walking, reading, music, theatre, cinema and socialising with friends and family.
