HOST Policy Research: The Team
John Barry
John Barry, BA (Econ), MA, MBA, has been working as a consultant, both independently and as a Senior Associate with HOST, since leaving the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) in 1997. This followed a career initially as a development project adviser with the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Co-operation, then as an economic adviser and labour market researcher/evaluator, and later as a policy adviser/programme manager, in the Department and its predecessors, and in the Manpower Services Commission and the Employment Service. Following his first degree at the University of Warwick, John did an MA in Economics in Canada and an MBA at Sheffield Business School, where he wrote his dissertation on cultural change in large organisations.
His consultancy work in recent years has involved him in a large number and variety of evaluation/research and development projects for a wide range of clients. These projects have included, for example, those relating to the National Teaching and Learning Programme, Centres for Excellence in Teacher Training, Train to Gain, Quality and Excellence Awards, Information, Advice and Guidance for adults and young people, employer investment in training, sector skills and qualifications development, education business links, minority ethnic learners, learner feedback, homelessness, Family Learning, FE responsiveness, learndirect/University for Industry, Skills for Life, workforce diversity, Modern Apprenticeships, LSC Local Initiative Funds, local economic assessments, and reviews of several major research centres established by DfES.
He lives in Sheffield with his wife and three grown-up children. During clement weather he trains, not too seriously, for the occasional 10K and half marathon, partly to keep reasonably fit for occasional walking and skiing holidays but primarily so that he can enjoy the pint afterwards! He also enjoys foreign travel, theatre, cinema and 1960s music.
