Dorothy
Berry-Lound
Dorothy Berry-Lound, FRSA, is founding partner and Managing Director of HOST Policy Research.
Since 1986, she has been extensively involved in the development of HOST as an independent evaluation and policy research body specialising in education, employment and training development studies for government departments and directly-funded agencies.
Dorothy has directed, or been involved in, various projects concerning the evaluation of aspects of skills and employment policy, in particular the evaluation of various programmes aimed at encouraging innovation within education and training providers. Much of this has had a strategic focus. Whilst some of this has involved evaluating ESF-funded initiatives (such as ADAPT), the majority has been UK-based, focused on post-16 provision.
Dorothy is an acknowledged authority in applying intensive survey and case study methodologies to strategy studies in the learning skills sector. She has developed particular expertise on infrastructure and skills development policy in sector skills training, and also on novel approaches to lifelong learning (particularly amongst disadvantaged adults) and associated qualification developments.
Dorothy continues to work with a range of organisations in both the public and private sectors. She has extensive expertise in the design and conduct of systematic survey research for employment policy and VET research. A pioneer in the use of structured telephone interview surveys in policy research and evaluation, she has also developed HOST’s reputation for robust, high response, self-completion postal and e-surveys of employers, educational institutions and individuals in or entering the labour market.
As Managing Director of HOST, Dorothy enjoys a range of management responsibilities, including an active role in the design and co-ordination of selected projects. A qualified trainer, she is responsible for staff development, and acts as mentor to HOST Associates in relation to various aspects of project direction and methodological expertise. She is currently working on a sustainable environmental policy for HOST, and developing a series of training modules for HOST Associates and others.
Dorothy is a practising Buddhist, and outside of HOST runs her own healing practice. She is an artist, author and tai chi instructor.
